4 professional tips for defrosting your freezer

Regularly defrosting your freezer has many advantages, especially if you have an older model. For instance, it can help maximize your appliance’s energy efficiency and free up more available space inside it. At Ateliers G. Paquette, we specialize in repairing freezers, washing machines and many other appliances for customers in Montreal and throughout Quebec. Our team has put together four expert tips for defrosting your freezer.

Read the user manual

The user manual contains a wealth of information on how to properly maintain your freezer. If you misplaced the manual, check if it’s available to download from the manufacturer’s website. This booklet indicates how often to defrost your freezer and, depending on your model, instructions on how to do it and where to put the drain hose.

Place your food in coolers

Once unplugged, empty the freezer and temporarily store everything in one or more coolers. Add ice or ice packs to prevent food from thawing.

Lay out several absorbent cloths to soak up the water

Place several thick towels around the bottom of the appliance to absorb as much water as possible. Do it as soon as you start the defrosting process rather than waiting for the dripping to begin. Make sure to replace water-logged towels as needed.

If you have a small freezer, move it into your garage after unplugging it, so you don’t have to worry about damaging your flooring.

Safely speed up the defrosting process

Although the easiest and safest way to defrost your freezer is to leave the door open and wait for the ice to melt on its own, there are a few things you can do to speed up the process. For example, you can position a fan in front of the opening to circulate air or try placing a pot of hot water on one of the shelves with a folded towel underneath.

Does your freezer form large amounts of frost quickly? If so, you may need to have it inspected by a professional technician. Don’t hesitate to contact an Ateliers G. Paquette team member. We offer comprehensive freezer repair services and have a large inventory of replacement parts to serve customers in Montreal and elsewhere in Quebec.
