Ateliers G Paquette Change Gasket

How to change the rubber gasket on your fridge or freezer

Over time, the rubber gasket around your fridge or freezer door may crack, tear or become loose and brittle. This could cause cold air to escape, reducing your appliance’s energy efficiency. Moreover, your food could spoil. Fortunately, replacing a rubber gasket is an easy and affordable task. As experts in repairing industry-leading refrigerator and freezer brands like Frigidaire, LG and Maytag, the team at Ateliers G. Paquette in Montreal have put together a few tips for replacing a rubber door gasket.

What to prepare

Fortunately, you don’t need any special tools to replace a rubber door gasket. The most important thing is that you purchase a new gasket that’s compatible with your fridge or freezer. If you know which part you need, use our online order form. However, if you need help finding a specific part, one of our knowledgeable staff can point you in the right direction.

Remove the existing gasket

Rubber door gaskets are usually attached to the appliance with an interlocking system. Therefore, all you have to do is pull up on the rubber strip to detach it. Once the old gasket has been removed, wipe down the recessed area where it used to be with a damp cloth. This will get rid of any dirt and debris to ensure the new gasket properly adheres.

Install the new gasket

When you’re ready, align the new gasket into the recess along the door and press it into place. Start at the top corner of the door and apply pressure along the length of the gasket to ensure a snug fit.

Once you’re done, make sure the door seals tightly. Sometimes, brand new gaskets can get deformed in storage. If this is the case, use a hairdryer to soften the rubber and bend it back into shape.

Although replacing a door gasket is usually a straightforward task, you may run into a few problems. Some gaskets, for example, are held in place with glue, making them difficult to remove and install. If you need help, don’t hesitate to contact our team.
