How to maintain your range hood
If there’s one household appliance that gets overlooked, even neglected, it’s your range hood. Most people turn it on when they’re cooking, turn it off when they’ve finished and the forget about it. This is all fine and good — right up till the moment it isn’t! As leaders in appliance repair, Ateliers G. Paquette fixes household appliances of all kinds, including refrigerators, stoves, washers and dryers throughout Quebec. From our years of experience, we can tell you that regular maintenance goes a long way in extending the lifespan of your range hood. Consequently, this will prevent it from breaking down at the worst possible moment (for example, when you’re in the middle of cooking a particularly pungent dish). In this article, we give you our best range hood maintenance tips.
Best practices and products for range hood maintenance
The filters in your range hood need to be cleaned on a regular basis, as the unit functions less efficiently when the filters are clogged. The frequency with which you should clean the filters depends on how often you use your range hood.
Here’s how to clean the filters:
- Don’t use a regular dish soap such as Sunlight®. These products are ineffective at removing food residue from the filters. At Ateliers G. Paquette, we’ve found that using a degreasing soap such as Hertel® when soaking and brushing the filters is much more effective.
- If the filters are made of stainless steel, you can wash them with minimal hassle by loading them in the dishwasher. However, aluminium filters can become stained or discoloured after cleaning them this way.
Are your filters damaged or do you want to replace them? Visit one of our stores or order replacement filters through our online store.
The exterior of your range hood should also be cleaned with a specialized product. Liquid cleaners such as Windex® aren’t strong enough to remove food residue that sticks to exterior metal surfaces, especially if they’re made of stainless steel. These food residues leave nasty stains that can only be eliminated with a cleaning cream such as STAINLESS POLISH® (Product No. 903069). After the exterior of the range hood has been cleaned, a protective cleaner such as PRO-LINK® (Product No. YA007C) should be applied.
