What to Do When Your Washing Machine Door Doesn't Open

Did you just run a wash cycle, and now your washing machine door is stuck shut? Does the indicator light say the door's locked? If you're unsure what to do next, the washing machine repair experts at Ateliers G. Paquette in Montreal have put together a short guide to help you out. Here are a few troubleshooting tips.

Initial steps

Avoid forcing the door open. Doing so could damage the mechanism and jam the door in place. Here are two things you can do to try and solve the problem:

Check the water drainage

The door may lock shut if your washing doesn't drain properly at the end of a wash cycle. First, see if you can tell how much water is in the machine. Then, try draining the water by running a spin cycle or using the drain hose. The door may unlock once the water goes below a certain level.

Unplug the appliance

Try unplugging the washing machine and waiting about 10 minutes. Then, try opening the door without forcing it. If this doesn't work, plug your appliance back in and run a wash cycle. The door may unlock once it's finished.

Additional checks

If the above steps don't work, the door mechanism may be broken or defective. However, don't throw in the towel just yet. Consult your user manual to see if any safety functions like the childproof lock have been left on. If so, find out how to deactivate them. You can also look for instructions on how to open the appliance door manually.

If you can't get to the root of the problem, you may need to replace a part or call a professional to inspect the appliance and identify the cause.
