HOW TO REPLACE YOUR REFRIGERATOR’S WATER FILTER

Image of a water filter in a fridge

Although convenient, refrigerators with water and ice dispensers require a little more maintenance, including regular water filter changes. Ateliers G. Paquette is your go-to source for appliance sales and service in Montreal and throughout Quebec. We have a wide inventory of replacement parts, including water filters, motors and pumps, to help you use your appliances to their full potential. Here’s a short guide to replacing the water filter in your refrigerator.

Locate the water filter

The location of the filter varies depending on the model of your appliance. For example, it may be located behind the grille at the base of the fridge, inside near the bottom or in the back upper-right corner. If you can’t find the filter, consult the appliance’s user manual.

Identify the type of water filter

Unless otherwise specified, the new water filter should be the same brand and type as the old one. This will ensure you don’t damage your appliance. Check the model code on the back of the used filter to find the right one. If necessary, consult your appliance’s user manual. Then, browse our selection of water filters.

Step-by-step to replace the water filter itself

Follow these steps to replace your refrigerator’s water filter:

  1. Unplug your refrigerator as a safety measure. Although this step isn’t required for all refrigerators, it’s good practice. If you’re unsure, consult the appliance’s user manual.

  2. Turn off the water supply to your refrigerator.

  3. Open the compartment that contains the filter. Depending on the model, you may be able to pull it straight out or rotate it slightly and wiggle it out.

  4. If necessary, remove the safety cap on the new filter cartridge. Then, insert the filter into the slot and lock it in place before closing the compartment.

  5. Rinse the filter with a generous amount of water (four gallons or about seven minutes flow) to remove any impurities.

  6. Reset the indicator light, if applicable, to ensure you’re notified when it’s time to replace the filter again. If you don’t know how to do this, the appliance’s user manual should provide the information you need.
