My Dryer Won’t Start: What Should I Do?

Dryer

Did you transfer your laundry from the washer to the dryer, only to discover that it won’t start? Don’t panic! The dryer repair experts at Ateliers G. Paquette in Montreal can help you identify and fix the issue by inspecting the main parts and components of your dryer.

Inspect The Parts That Commonly Malfunction

Even if you’re not particularly knowledgeable about appliances, here are a few simple things you can do to try and pinpoint the source of the problem.

  • Door. The dryer won’t start if the door isn’t completely closed.

  • Start button. This button can be temperamental on some dryer models. Before doing anything else, make sure you’ve pressed the start button correctly and held it down for least two seconds.

  • Cycle selector dial. This dial may not be in the right position. Turn the dial to the start position and slightly pass over the chosen cycle line to ensure it’s positioned correctly.

  • Power supply. Check that the dryer is plugged in correctly and that there aren’t any issues with the circuit breakers or fuses in your home’s electrical system. If your dryer is gas-powered, try plugging in another appliance to test the power supply.

  • Switch. If your dryer doesn’t make any noise when you try to start it, chances are the switch is defective. Otherwise, the dryer would beep when you try to start it.

  • Thermal fuse. If your appliance overheats, the thermal fuse may have melted and require replacement. This part is typically located on the fan housing, or on the burner if you have a gas dryer.

  • Dryer belt. The drum won’t turn if this part is broken.

  • Driver motor. If everything seems to be working fine but the motor is making a whirring sound, remove the belt to make sure the fan belt is clear. If it is, you may need to replace the motor.
