The microwave oven is a must-have appliance in a modern kitchen. Whether it's heating up a meal, melting butter or steaming vegetables, it saves us precious time. However, it can also become a source of bad odours if not properly maintained. Here are some simple and effective tips to avoid unpleasant odours in your microwave.

1. Clean Your Microwave Regularly

Cleaning the microwave is the first step to preventing bad odours. Food splatters, grease residues, and spilled liquids can quickly give off a stubborn odour if not cleaned up promptly.

A simple method is to heat a bowl of water with a few slices of lemon or a spoonful of white vinegar for 3 to 5 minutes. The steam released will help loosen the residue, which you can then wipe off with a clean cloth. This cleaning should be done at least once a week, or more often if you use your microwave daily.

2. Cover Your Food

Always use a microwave-safe lid or plastic wrap designed for cooking. This prevents splashing and limits the spread of odours. In addition, it allows for more even cooking.

3. Avoid Certain Smelly Foods

Some foods such as fish, cheese or strongly spiced dishes can leave a bad odour in the microwave. If possible, reheat these foods in an airtight container or use another cooking appliance.

4. Use Baking Soda

Baking soda is an excellent odour neutralizer. Place a small open can of baking soda in the microwave (without heating it) when not in use. It will absorb lingering odours.

5. Leave the Door Ajar After Use

After using your microwave, leave the door ajar for a few minutes to allow moisture and odours to escape. This helps prevent mould buildup and bad odours in the microwave.

6. Check the Turntable and Corners

Residue can easily accumulate under the turntable or in the corners of the microwave. Remove the tray regularly to wash it in warm soapy water and inspect the nooks and crannies for a thorough cleaning of your microwave.

7. Use Natural Ingredients

If despite a good cleaning, a bad odour in the microwave persists, you can use natural ingredients to deodorize the interior. An effective solution is to heat a mixture of water and baking soda (1 cup of water + 1 tablespoon of baking soda) for 2 to 3 minutes. Then leave the door closed for 10 minutes for the steam to work. This neutralizes odours without chemicals and leaves a feeling of freshness.
