When you use your washer, does it make a racket and then start inching menacingly across your floor? Don’t worry, your machine isn’t possessed. However, it does need a little attention. At Ateliers G. Paquette, we have years of experience in household appliance repair and are knowledgeable about the various issues that affect washers. In this article, we give you some troubleshooting tips that can help you fix a wonky laundry machine.
CHECK THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE LOAD
If all the clothes stay on one side of the drum during the wash cycle, the machine can start to vibrate. Be sure to distribute items evenly around the drum when loading your clothes. If necessary, you can interrupt the cycle to redistribute the load, provided your washer has an option that lets you pause it mid-cycle.
MAKE SURE THE WASHER IS LEVEL
When a washer doesn’t sit level on the floor, this can cause vibrations and banging. To level your machine, adjust the legs by loosening and tightening them. You’ll know it’s level when it doesn’t tilt back and forth or left and right when jostled. If your washer sits on a smooth surface, place rubber caps under the feet to prevent movement.
SEE IF ANYTHING IS STUCK IN THE MACHINE
It’s possible for small items like bra straps to get caught in the holes of the drum and create a rattling sound during the cycle. To check if anything is stuck, turn the drum manually when the machine is off. If you hear any unusual sounds, there’s probably something stuck. You’ll need to call in one of our technicians to dislodge the item.
CHECK THE WINDOW SEAL
If you have a front-loading machine, check the condition of the window seal. If it’s damaged or warped, it can rub against the drum and create a screeching noise. If you aren’t able to put the seal firmly back in place, you’ll need to replace it. Fortunately, we probably have the washer part you need in stock.
